Savinelli's Autograph is the Italian marque's limited-production, handmade series, utilizing specially aged extra-extra plateau briar and being crafted by only three of the brand's most experienced carvers. From start to finish, the process of crafting a single one of these pipes is handled by a single one of these veteran craftsmen, the series providing them with design freedom and allowing them to express their personal creativity. This Volcano is an interesting piece, eschewing the more oft-seen ridgeline around its base in favor of a more softly rounded arc, emphasizing the briar's slight bulge out from the underside. The walls take on a swift taper to the rim from this expansive base, rounding out the totality of the bowl's frame. An angled transition pairs the bowl to a compressed, ovoid shank that lifts to meet a tapered stem of smartly curved acrylic. This acrylic stem adds some lovely contrast against the stummel's ruby-tinged sandblast, one that reveals rippling bands of growth rings flowing down the walls of the bowl.
